Badly strung lights are the difference between a tree that glows and a tree with a bright ring around a dark middle. The fix is technique, not more lights.
How many lights you actually need
The widely used rule of thumb is about 100 lights per vertical foot: roughly 400 for a 4-foot tabletop tree, 600 for 6 feet, 750 for 7.5 feet. Go higher if you like a bright, modern look; go lower for a soft traditional glow.
The weave method (better than circling)
- Start at the top, plug end down — leave the plug near the base where your outlet is.
- Weave the strand in and out: push some lights 6 to 8 inches deep into the branches, then bring the next section back toward the tips.
- Work in vertical sections top to bottom instead of spiraling around — it is easier to keep coverage even.
- Fluff each section of branches before lighting it, not after.
Pre-lit vs. stringing your own
Pre-lit trees save 30 to 60 minutes and the lights are evenly spaced by machine, which is hard to beat by hand. The tradeoff: when a section eventually fails years later, repairs are fiddly. If you string your own, LED strands last far longer than old incandescents and stay cool.
Troubleshooting dark sections
- Check that every plug connection between strands is fully seated — most ‘dead zones’ are a loose plug, not dead bulbs.
- On pre-lit trees, check the fuse in the plug (a tiny sliding door) before assuming the strand is dead.
- Replace the whole strand rather than hunting single bulbs on cheap sets — your time is worth more.
